We will provide the name and contact information of a therapist with a pro bono slot (therapy at no cost to you) who best fits your preferences. We will then offer a pro bono slot with you to another therapist seeking therapy. Matching is done manually under the supervision of our Director. The timeline for being matched is based on the availability of providers in your state matching your criteria. At any point, you can reach out to us and check on the status of your match. Participation in the pro bono psychotherapy network is completely optional - please let us know if you would prefer to opt out for now. If you are licensed and cannot offer a pro bono slot, you will not be able to receive a slot in return. For unlicensed therapists, you are welcome in the Collective. You currently have two options to participate in the pro bono therapy network. If your supervisor is open to providing supervision for you to offer a pro bono case, fill out and submit the “Supervision Agreement” in the members only area. If that is not currently an option, please complete a profile and we will pair you to receive therapy without providing a supervised pro bono slot if licensed therapists in your state donate multiple slots. Who are we? Right now, we are a team of one social worker, three part-time staff members, and a few awesome volunteers. We see a BIG problem and are working to create meaningful change through the power of mutual aid. Our Director, Emily Oliver, launched the Collective in July 2021. We now have members in over 30 states. We plan to file for non-profit status next year. We are committed to truly making meaningful change to reduce burnout. Why does the Collective exist? Because despite the incredibly important work we do to support the mental health of those in our communities, we don’t have the resources we need to keep ourselves well while we do that work. Now, more than ever, the world needs mental health providers. We need to acknowledge that that need is a heavy load to carry, as we ourselves navigate a lot of the same challenges we are supporting others through. In many ways, this is a social justice issue. Agencies, organizations, and companies that serve marginalized populations are unfortunately often under-funded. Their staff has limited resources for paid time off, professional trainings, quality supervision, employee assistance programs, consultation time, and insurance that covers therapy. Clients are more likely to receive care from burned out providers with high case loads who may not have access to therapy or peer support groups. Providers either leave the field or move on as soon as they are able to do so in hopes that the next job will be better. We can’t address all of those factors that impact quality of life, but we can walk with one another. We want to improve the sustainability of our field. We want to empower our colleagues and improve the quality of care to our clients by reducing burnout. We also hope this will reduce the incidence of caring, compassionate helping professionals leaving the field as they encounter broken systems. Therapy alone is not the answer, and we want to facilitate conversations surrounding advocacy and resources. We are based in the United States. The goal is to be able to have therapists in all 50 states with a diverse representation of our amazing community, including BIPOC therapists, LGBTQIA2+ therapists, therapists of all ages, specialties, religions, and backgrounds.
